Our physical and mental selves have no independent nature. The atoms and elements in our bodies, and the stream of mental experiences we call “mind,” all arise from causes beyond our control. Nothing we call “me” is self-created. Physically, our bodies and their parts are composed of carbon, nitrogen, calcium, oxygen, phosphorus, hydrogen, and DNA building blocks like adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine. These elements, along with their essence, belong to the universe as a whole.
Similarly, the mind—whether understood as a process of consciousness or an unfolding stream of experiences—is not a singular, unchanging entity. Each moment of the mind arises from the previous one, with no moment existing independently or possessing its own essence. No aspect of the mind is self-generated or permanent.
This means that no person is truly separate from any other. Every being is equally selfless in essence, and all apparent traces a.k.a differences—skin tone, language, culture, beliefs—are surface ripples of a deeper, shared reality and therefore, don’t belong to any individual.
This understanding reveals a radical truth: every action against another is ultimately an action against oneself.
